As told by his mother, Veronika
From the very beginning, Kevin’s story has been one of intention, love, and remarkable strength. As Bee Mighty’s newest Mighty Bee, Kevin’s journey is a powerful reminder that even the smallest warriors can show incredible might.
Kevin’s parents had planned his pregnancy, so the news that they were expecting came with joy and excitement. The pregnancy and labor went smoothly, with no signs that anything was wrong. Kevin entered the world on October 10, 2019, slightly earlier than planned. His mother, Veronika, was scheduled for an induction at 6:00 a.m., but her water broke at 3:00 a.m. When they arrived at the hospital, everything was already prepared, and events moved quickly. Meeting Kevin for the first time was an exciting and emotional moment, filled with hope for the future.
Five days after his birth, Kevin was diagnosed with a rare gene mutation. At the time, his family could not fully understand what this diagnosis would mean. Months later, in January 2025, Kevin was admitted to the NICU at around three months of age. That first NICU experience became the scariest time of their lives. Veronika truly feared they might lose their baby boy.
Throughout their NICU journey, the doctors and nurses at Levine Children’s Hospital provided exceptional care and support. While every physician made a lasting impact, one NICU nurse offered words that Veronika will never forget: “Be your son’s advocate and fight for his future, because if not you, then who?” That advice became a guiding force for their family.
Following Kevin’s diagnosis, it became clear that he would need full-time support. Kevin is nonverbal and unable to hold his head up, sit without support, or walk. Physical therapy and occupational therapy have been especially beneficial, helping Kevin make meaningful progress and giving his family hope with every small step forward.
Life at home brought new challenges. Kevin’s first year was extremely difficult, requiring Veronika to learn how to give injections to a tiny baby, support him through seizures, and manage complex medication adjustments. Each day brought a new learning curve, but the family faced it together with resilience and determination.
Hope came through therapy and community support. One of Kevin’s occupational therapists recommended Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) sessions at Aspire Pediatric Therapy. After completing ten sessions, Kevin showed incredible improvements in his movement. When Veronika asked about resources to help continue therapy, she was introduced to the Bee Mighty organization. After applying for a grant, the family received support that allowed Kevin to continue receiving the therapies that help him grow stronger.
Looking back, Veronika offers encouragement to families navigating a similar path. The NICU can feel overwhelming, a place where time slows, and emotions run high. She reminds parents that they are not alone and that it’s okay to ask for help. Advocating for their child, celebrating even the smallest victories, and taking time to rest are all essential. The NICU may feel endless, but it is only one chapter—not the entire story.
Kevin is Bee Mighty’s January Mighty Bee, and his journey reflects the true meaning of strength. His story is not defined by limitations, but by perseverance, love, and the unwavering fight for his future. 💛🐝
